My grandfather's name was Augustus Elvis. His nickname was Lefty, but many older relatives/friends referred to him as Elvis. No one ever made much of a deal about him sharing the name with a certain someone, because it was obvious that it was coincedence of a popular southern boy name. It was a memorable and fun experience to be asked if I was Elvis' granddaughter though!
The last persons experience made me curious so I did some more research on the name Elvis. It peaked in 1957 (post Presley) at 312. 597 boys named Elvis were born that year. From 1880 to 1950 it did place in the lower top 1000 more often than now, but I wouldn't go quite as far as saying that it was a popular southern boys name. Though the Elvises prior to Presley might have been all clustered together within a certain few states so while by no means that popular, it could have been a name that was heard of and not considered strange in certain areas. But can't see three or four Elvises in a one room schoolhouse along with all the little Johns. Nowadays I don't think the name works anymore at all. I'm kind of shocks that it was in the top 1000 of 2011. I can only see it as a middle name now.
My little son is named Elvis. He is two years old and it fits him perfectly. I love the name obviously. We tend to call him Vissy a lot though that was never planned.
I cannot imagine an ordinary person being named Elvis. That name makes me think of Rock 'n Roll music. Elvis Presley was a great singer and I love his songs. No ordinary person could measure up to that. No, the name Elvis belongs to the king only!
My son's name is Elvis Priestley. We named him Elvis because my last name is Priestley and would often get confused with Presley. To this day, I get asked of I'm Elvis' granddaughter. my co-worker said that it would be awesome If we named him after the king so we did. Some people love it and some people hate it, hopefully he see's the humor in his name when he grows up.
