Transferred use of the surname, which arose from the name of a Scottish river. Kelvin was first used as a personal name in the 1920s, perhaps in honor of Baron Kelvin (1824 - 1907), the British mathematician and physicist to whom the Kelvin scale of temperature is attributed.

My fathers name is Kelvin, and I was named after him. We are the only two that I know of in the family with the name. It never fails for me to get hit with the confusion if I said "Kevin" or "Calvin." I never did understand the difficulty specially when it's seen on paper or my shirt. So far I've met three other guys with my name. I gotta admit though. I love having my name.
My boyfriends name is Kelvin, and to be honest, there was that initial confusion of "did you say Kevin or Calvin?" And he still deals with that on the daily whenever he meets someone new. But he's told me that he's used to it and when he mentions the Kelvin scale people usually catch on, which is kind of funny. He is a third generation Kelvin and loves his name because besides him and his dad he's never met another Kelvin before, and neither have I. Besides that initial confusion it is a very unique name that just sticks.
