- Comments and insights on the name Ryker
Does anybody know a real-life Ryker (with Ryker as a first name, not a last)? I have heard of this name but am hesitant to seriously consider using it in any way.
Also, does the name Ryker have a meaning? I haven't found any, but it seems to me that every perfect name should have a good meaning behind it.
Kerry and Ryker are anagrams of each other; they contain the same letters.
- Personal experiences with the name Ryker
My son & his wife couldn't agree on a boys name, so he went to the web and typed in Dutch boy name, up popped Ryker. We now have a 18 month old grandson, Ryker Joseph. We have since heard of 3 other little ones with the same first name. It didn't take long to get used to it and now no other name would fit. He has a sister named KayLee. On occasion we shorten it to "RY", sometimes we call him "ry guy" or "ry man", because his little boy wild side is showing.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!! Isn't it funny how you don't hear about a name until someone you know uses it, then it starts to pop up everywhere?
My son, born August 2010, is named Ryker Hudson. The name came to my husband who saw it on a birth announcement at a customer's house. I looked it up on SSA and low and behold it had the same ranking as our daughter, Brenna. Number 420. Then I looked up the meaning- strong, becoming rich and derivative of Richard. Richard happens to be his Dad's name. I was sold! I googled Ryker and came across some male model...he's good looking so that didn't deter me. I was clueless about Riker's Island but several older people have made the comment as was I clueless about Star Trek. Not into prisons or Star Trek so I don't really care about it. It fits a sweet handsome boy in my opinion and it is definitely masculine in my opinion. We call him Ryk and Rykie. When we introduce him the older population will say stuff like, did you say Biker or like biker?? But if that's the worst, I'll take it! I've found that either people love it or hate it, but isn't that the case with any name? At least he won't be known as Ryker R. like the poor little Aidan and Jack's will have to get used to.
My cousins gave their son Ryker as his middle name. Adorable
My little brother(now 18) is named Ryker. I really like it,but be warned, people mention Riker's Island or Commander Riker from Star Trek all the time. This is perfectly okay with him though cuz he's a little nerd. My brother had a speech problem when he was young and couldn't say R sounds so it came out like Michael.
- Nicknames for Ryker
My son Ryker John, born in June '06, also goes by the nickname Ryke or Rykie - which sounds a lot like Mike or Mikey, only starting with an "R". The nickname came very naturally. The name is also very natural and easy-to-say - no one has trouble. And, he never gets mixed up with any other kids at school except, rarely, another little boy named Ryder. And they only get mixed up in print (hats, lunch boxes, etc.) There's only one Ryker and everyone knows him!
We haven't had any problems with the name. Most people really like it, especially men <60 yrs old. If you want the range of negatives we've heard, here they are in order of frequency: Some people have repeated it back to me and asked if it's a 'family name', which seems to be a polite way of stepping around a negative reaction. People in the Northeast US sometimes say it reminds them of Riker's Island (a prison). Some have mentioned if rhymes with 'biker' so they think it sounds 'tough' (doesn't every name rhyme with something? And, so what - Lance Armstrong is a biker, isn't he?). We've heard a few say it sounds like a dog's name. I did a net search and found a police dog named Ryker. But there's probably a police dog out there named Mike, too!
We love the name and so far, so does he! We figure if that ever changes he can decide to go by R. John or R.J.
- Meanings and history of the name Ryker
Danish Form of Richard Meaning "Powerful Ruler"
German Meaning "Rich"
This is by no means claiming history to the name Ryker, its only my history for naming my son. The
original idea for me was Star Trek. However I am also from the New England area of Cape Cod, Mass. So
I had heard of Riker's Island. When it came to the spelling, I took into account the tv show and the
prison. Also if any one remebers, another really old tv show which for some reason must have made an
impression on me when I was young. Was the Galloping Gourmet and the host's name was Graham Kerr, he
was a chef and by the end of every show he would be quite smashed,(must have found it funny). Anyway,
between the negative of Riker's island, rye bread, Rye New York, my favorite tv show Star Trek Next
Generation and Chef Kerr. I came up with RYKERR born in 1993. And yes those are, two R's at the end
for the Bostonian's who don't pronounce them. I had a fantastic time naming him and raising him, he is
now a fantastic senior in high school. Meaning can be important but just having fun ain't bad. Enjoy!
- Famous real-life people named Ryker
My husband found the name Ryker online a few weeks after we found out I was pregnant. We both loved the name, and we always went back to it. We knew about the Star Trek connection and had some good laughs about it while I was pregnant. People's reactions were mixed at first, but now we get comments all the time about how awesome his name is and how well it fits his personality. He is 3 yo now and all the kids at his day care shout out, "Ryker Russo!" When they see him.
When we found out I was pregnant a 2nd time, we felt pressure to come up with another unique name. We started joking that we had a "Commander Ryker" and now needed a JT Kirk, but we felt that Tiberious was just a bit much for us...so we shortened it to Tiber. So now we have a Ryker and Tiber.
Bottom line: If you like it, go for it. Don't go by other people's reactions.
