Afton comes in part from a geological term,'aftonian'-coming from the ice;relating to glaciers. There is a beautiful 5-pointed valley in Wyoming called Star Valley that was formed by a glacier's melting. One of the little towns there is called Afton.
Many people started naming their girls "Afton" after mis-hearing "I laughed and she'd smile" as "Afton she'd smile" in the song "Mandolin Rain" by Bruce Hornsby.

An old teacher that I grew to be very close with has her sister now working with her and her name is Afton. It is such a beautiful name and suits her perfectly. Her sister, or my teacher, calls her 'Aftie' which I think is very pretty and suits her happy lifestyle. A very unique name that Im in love with.
