- Comments and insights on the name Alia
Aila and Alia are anagrams of each other; they share they same letters.
We named our daughter Alia in 1997, because I read (and loved) the name in the sci-fi classic "Dune." We pronounce it "ahLEEah." We have found adults and kids react positively to the name, though many people mispronounce the name at first. (Most usual mispronounciation: AHleeah.) Overall, it's simple, pretty, and unique within our community, but it doesn't sound like a dotcom. :-)
- Personal experiences with the name Alia
My granddaughter was named Alia in 1999 by my son who is a big fan of Dune books also. Their other daughter is named Alexis, and we often call them Lia and Lexi. It just flows really well.
My daughter was given this name as a memory for my deceased sister, but it is an amazing name that makes her differnt from her classmates. it helps that she is a BIG personality too.
I was born in 1984 and am named Alia. My dad got the name (like a few other comments above mine) because he was/is a big fan the Dune book series and thought it was really pretty and unique. It's pronounced uh-LEE-uh. People used to pronounce it wrong all the time (usually AAA-lee-uh or AH-lee-uh) but in the past maybe 15 years or so it's really grown in popularity so when people see it they almost always say it right now. I have 3 kids and they all know several girls with my name only I've yet to come across anyone that spells it the way I do. Nobody ever spells my name right but that's OK. I have always loved my name.My middle name is Marie.
- Nicknames for Alia
See, I think the name Alia is nicely compact, and as such, doesn't need a nickname. But we don't exist in a vacuum, do we? Nicknames given to her by loved ones: Lee-Lee, Al, and Lia.
As an infant my daughter couldn't pronounce her name properly and called herself Lee-Lah. To this day we call her that at home.I was born in 1984 and am named Alia. Like the comment above, the most common nicknames I had growing up were Al, Lee-Lee and Lee-Lah. I've also been called Leels quite a bit. When my sister was a baby she couldn't say Alia (most toddlers can't). She called me EE-LAH which I always thought was so cute (she's 14 yrs younger than me) my mom has told me that she wanted to call me Allie as a nickname when I was a baby but it just never fit.
