Despite the French form of Brienne, this is definitely not a French given name. Brienne is a place name in France, but its use as an English girl's name owes much more to the rise of the similar contemporary names Brianne and Brianna. The name is also featured in the popular "Song of Fire and Ice" fantasy series.

Brienne, the Maid of Tarth, is a character in George R. R. Martin's critically acclaimed A Song Of Ice And Fire fantasy series. A warrior, though not a knight due to the sexism of her society, she is considered very ugly by her world's standards (and would be seen similarly in mainstream Western culture, too, unfortunately) and is mockingly called Brienne the Beauty for this fact. Throughout the series, however, it becomes clear that she is incredibly noble, patient, honourable, and courageous, if incredibly stubborn, despite the prejudices of her countrymen.
