Extremely rare in the U.S. but used in Israel (hah-GAHR).

Well, it's not a pretty name, like some other Biblical names. I guess that's why people in the U.S. don't use it. Also, there was a comic in the newspaper about a Viking called Hagar the Horrible!

However - different ethnic, different culture. Also, different taste and thought. In the U.S. this name might be thought as an unpretty name (people said unpretty because ‘ugly‘ sounds too unpleasant) but in Islamic Country such as: Turkey, Malaysia, Borneo and else this name can be labeled quite common, although its not as common and popular as Sarah, Alya or Sofia but since this name had a great history about the first person named Hagar, some parents tend to choose this name to named their girl.

Personal experiences with the name Hagar

I personally like the name Hagar, because of it's history. Hagar is a strong-hearted girl and didn't question further more about his husband's sacrifice as a prophet because she know it wouldn't help her husband if she keep shots him with questions so she patiently endure it. In the end, her patience was repaid with the non-stop flowing water called Zamzam.

The dry desert turn into a town and now it is known as Mecca.

The meaning is 'wanderer' in Arabic or 'flight' or 'stranger' in Hebrew. In the Old Testament and Qur'an, Hagar was the Egyptian handmaiden of Sarah and Abraham's second wife. She became the mother of Ishmael, who was the founder of the Arab people.

In history, the God of Muslim, Allah told Abraham to leave his wife, Hagar and his son, Ishmael in the middle of the desert. Hagar didn't get angry but instead asked Abraham if this was a task that Allah order to test him as a prophet. Abraham said yes and the strong-willed Hagar and her son survived in the middle of the dry desert with little food and water.

Later, Allah sent an angel to the helpless family and the angel told Hagar to dig a spot at the desert. Then, water came out non-stop from the little hole she dug. The water now is called Zamzam. This shows that based on the oldest (original) history of the name Hagar, the name can be related to the strong-hearted Hagar and may the person who inherit this name be like that as well Hagar.
