- Meanings and history of the name Kateri
The name Kateri derives from Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, who received the name as a form of Catherine. She was a Native American who was the daughter of a Catholic Algonquin mother and Mohawk father in 1658. She is also known as the Lily of the Mohawks, The Flower of the Algonquin, and the Mystic of the Wilderness. Her face had been scarred at a young age from illness, but on her deathbed her skin suddenly became clear and beautiful. She was beatified on June 22, 1980 by Pope John Paul II.
UPDATE: Blessed Kateri is now St. Kateri -- she was canonized on Oct. 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.
