- Personal experiences with the name Susannah
The Stephen Foster song "Oh Susannah" is the theme song of my life - I hear the first line on at least a biweekly basis. But it's a nice old-fashioned name and I love it.
I was named Susan in 1958, but have always wished I was Susannah. My Mom wanted to name me that, but my Dad didn't like it. So, I had to grow up with a common first name and a common last name, and at least 4 other Susan's in my class all the time. I still wish I was Susannah. It's so beautiful, both in sound and in spelling.
My name is Susannah and I absolutely love it! I'm also very partial to this spelling of my name. I was called by my full name by my family all my life. When I was about 11, friends started calling me Susie and so that stuck at school (Really though I go by both now). Whenever I meet new people I often get compliments on my name. I love the romantic feel to it, without it being as common or frilly as some of the other traditional romantic girls' names. Only con I can think of: everyone singing "Oh Susannah!" to me all my life. I'd be so glad to never hear that song again!
