A Hebrew name meaning "palm tree"
There's two Tamars in the Bible - one was the daughter-in-law of Judah. After her first two husbands died because they rebelled against God, Judah refused to allow her to marry his third son, leaving her destitute. She retaliated by pretending to be a prostitute and tricking Judah into impregnating her, so that he had to support her.
The other Tamar was the daughter of King David. She was raped and then rejected by her half-brother Amnon (David's son by another wife) and took refuge with her full brother Absalom. This catalyzed a long period of violence in King David's family.
